A Medicine Man or Woman approaches the child and introduces him/her to the Great Spirit, The 4 powers and The 4 elements until it is found the Totem Spirit of the child. That was the child first name. During the course of life, the child could receive new Medicine Names after an initiation or a rite of passage.
